Art & Culture

A natural environment is also a cultural environment

Nature and culture are intertwined. Where interested visitors come upon great natural resources, cultural highlights and historic edifices are never far away. In the Hohe Tauern National Park region an array of breath-taking art and cultural treasures have become established over thousands of years, and these are just waiting for you to experience while you are on holiday.

Edifices steeped in history

A series of venerable pilgrimage churches, with the St. Vinzenz Church in Heiligenblut leading the way, entice visitors to enjoy spiritual experiences in the region. High above Rangersdorf, Carinthia’s highest pilgrimage church, the “Marterle” at 1836m altitude, awaits visitors and provides superb views to the Kreuzeck Group and the Lienz Dolomites. Like a picturesque fairy-tale castle, Burg Falkenstein towers above Mölltal near Obervellach. Starting from Obervellach, the castle is easily accessible via straightforward hiking paths.

“Music to touch”

For 20 years the small, yet perfectly formed music festival in Mallnitz, has proven that size and records have nothing to do with cultural quality. Every year world-famous artists transform the little village in the Hohe Tauern National Park into a centre of extensive culture, and demonstrate their great skills in front of this superb natural backdrop. Mallnitz parish church is a place of cultural creativity, and has a part to play in providing such high quality thanks to its special ambience and outstanding acoustics.

Cultural treasures everywhere you look

At the entrance to the Hohe Tauern National Park region in the town of Winklern there has, for a long time, been a very important building, Winklern Toll Tower. In times past, town tolls and road tolls were collected here, and today the “Tauern Crystal Treasure” exhibition awaits, with lots of interesting information about the fascinating world of mountain crystals. Things are no less mystical in the “Tauerngold” exhibition in the Putzenhof in Grosskirchheim, where you can discover the great treasures of the Hohe Tauern in one unique place.

From ancient times to traditional handcrafts

In Hofmuseum Pfeiffer interested visitors get to experience a great deal about the simplicity of life as it used to be in the mountains. Witness and learn about traditional handcrafts in the felting workshop in Mörtschach and in the Weaving Room in Heiligenblut. Here and there traditional handcrafts are still carried out; watch the professionals at work.
